What do we mean by Multi Sport?

The main multi sport events are Duathlons, Triathlons and Quadrathlons incorporating 2,3 or 4 events together. Duathlons usually combine running and cycling, Triathlons add swimming and Quadrathlons add the sport of canoeing into the events.

With three Club members, Graham Sheward, Ann Crawshaw and Keith Scrivener, all International Triathletes and Quadrathletes, the multi-sport side of running has produced much interest in the club.

Other GBRC members coverted to multi-sports are, Matt Anderson and Martin Whitmill, and there is growing interest being shown by more members. So if you are interested in any of these events Graham is always interested in a chat and you can read his articles in the Bentley News, or older articles in the Archive.

Gear and equipment can be obtained from 53-12 in Colchester, which specialises in multi-sport events. Visit the shop or the website and bag a bargain.

Orienteering means maps, varied terrain and adventure. It doesn't matter how young or old or fit you are. You can run, jog or walk, you decide your own pace. Orienteering is a sport where competitors navigate their way between control points marked on a specially drawn map. There are various orienteering disciplines, foot orienteering is the most common.
Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. The most challenging orienteering takes place in remote areas which have demanding terrain and fewer paths.

Foot Orienteering is the original form of orienteering: cross-country running or walking using a map and compass to find your way through a series of control points marked on the map. It originated in Scandinavia 100 years ago, but is now a popular competitive sport in all parts of the world.

To find out more visit the British Orienteering Federation web-site.

Steve Cartwright, Race Director, is a keen fan of Orienteering and has arranged 'trial' courses for Club members. This sport combines cross - country runing with map reading. What fun and adds another dimension to the club. Steve is only too pleased to chat with you about getting involved.
